Welcome to homebrew games. This forum is a place to discuss, learn, play, and enjoy homebrew video games and tools. This post contains some basic definitions of things you may find around the forum.
Hombrew is a vague term usually used to describe privately made game coding or development tools for commercially released game systems. Below is how we will define the various types of homebrew
Homebrew--- A homebrew is a new game or port coded from scratch. It uses all original code and was made after a game system's retail life span.
Reproduction---A reproduction can be one of 3 things. 1) It can be a reproduction of a prototype game that was never released commercially. 2) It can be a reproduction of a rare previously existing commercial release. I also group games know as translations into the reproduction group of things. 3) A translation is a reproduction of a foreign game that has has it's text translated to a different language. while technically a hack, the game play, graphics, and sound are not changed and the game essentially plays exactly the same, just in a different language.
Hack---Hacks are games that use existing games and/or coding to create a new game. Some can be simple level changes, others can just have sound or graphical changes.
The miscellaneous categories of homebrew include flash carts, development tools, and music/graphical demos.
As you look around the boards, you should be able to find lists of all the homebrew(new original games) released and playable on original hardware in each of the system categories. I plan to add reproductions at some point. I may add hacks, but the amount of Hacks existing out there for game systems is staggering.
